Shipping delays at world ports and surging demand from China are driving up shipping costs for many dry bulk commodities, including coal and iron ore. The Baltic Dry Index surged 21% in November.

Transportation authority wins federal funding to study freight shipments
October 20, 2004 – Industry minister David Emerson announces that the federal government is investing $150,000 in a BC project. The Greater Vancouver Transportation Authority has been awarded the funding to study freight shipments.

WestPac Terminals has decided that the Port of Prince Rupert will be the site of its new liquefied natural gas importation terminal. The project is tentatively scheduled to be completed in 2009.

Transport Canada reaches deal on security standards for ships entering US
Starting Summer 2004, US officials will accept Transport Canada's security certficates and grant registered Canadian ships the right to enter American waters. The deal allows the US to certify that Canadian registered ships meet new American security requirements.

Port Authority Snubbed
Vancouver Port Authority president Gordon Houston commented on the need for municipal support at a recent Vancouver Board of Trade luncheon. Vancouver port business alone contributes $3.4 billion into the BC economy and supports 62,000 jobs and yet local councils have not expressed their support. In addition, BC ports need to work together to develop an integrated ports strategy for the province is necessary to allow all ports to take advantage of the expected growth in business in the next 10 - 15 years.

Secuirty a priority for Port of Vancouver
