General Introduction

Training Department staff, member company personnel and members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) work together to develop and deliver a wide array of training programs to the shipping and cargo handling industry in the Province of British Columbia.

Meeting the training needs of the many complex and diverse ports on Canada's west coast, has enabled the BCMEA Training Department to develop the background, experience and resources to respond quickly to individual client needs.

The Training Department has also designed and delivered customized training programs to suit individual client needs in North American and Pacific Rim ports on a fee for service basis.


Need for training

Future training requirements are determined through a comprehensive manpower plan which takes into account growth in demand for skilled personnel, attrition rates among the existing workforce, the introduction of new equipment and changes in technology.


Facilities

The BCMEA Training Department has the latest in computer-based interactive simulation systems to deliver training for Ship Pedestal Crane, Ship Gantry Crane, Dock Gantry Crane and Rubber Tired Gantry, using progressively more challenging scenarios that are designed to simulate specific operational tasks.

The BCMEA Lift Truck/Mobile Equipment training facility on Rainbow Drive in North Vancouver provides trainees with a safe, controlled environment where they can develop operational skills, through the employment of practical and theoretical instruction, utilizing the latest in mobile equipment under the guidance of qualified instructors.


Department personnel

Department personnel are broadly experienced in the development and delivery of training programs to the marine and material handling industry.

Subject matter is developed by experienced longshore workers and management personnel who provide expertise and act as guides to familiarize the technical writer and technical illustrator with the equipment or job.
