Location
The Vancouver Dispatch Centre is located at 1430 Franklin Street in the City of Vancouver, just two blocks south of the Vancouver Waterfront.
Staff
The Dispatch Centre consists of a Dispatch Manager, two supervisors, eight full-time dispatchers and one office administrator. The staff receives and processes orders for labour in the Vancouver and Squamish areas from Member Companies and dispatches the required personnel to those companies.
Work Information
In order to provide employees with as much advance notice as possible about potential work opportunities, work information and gang orders are provided to employees through an interactive voice response system (IVR) which allows employees to determine the type of work available for each shift, the forecasted work opportunity and their approximate position in the sequence of dispatch. The work information is also available from the www.bcmea.com and the mybcmea.bcmea.com websites which are updated every five minutes.
Labour Orders
Each employer places orders for specified labour requirements prior to established order/cancellation times through a remote order entry system of networked computers. Daily dispatch slips are prepared by the system for all orders placed. This process is repeated for each shift.
Dispatch of Labour
Employees seeking work through the physical dispatch system must make themselves available at the dispatch centre prior to each designated dispatch time. Each employee is assigned a plate which contains all appropriate information including skill categories for which he/she is qualified. Employees are dispatched from among those physically present at the Association's Dispatch Hall or by telephone by Association staff. All qualified Union employees are dispatched prior to Casual employees. Work is assigned on a rotational basis to those qualified employees who make themselves available. Providing there are sufficient skilled employees available to meet the needs of the employers, Union members may select their work assignment from the work available on a particular day.
