Health and Safety
The Health and Safety department staff are responsible for the promotion of health and safety in the longshore industry and ensuring that awareness and concern for health and safety is inherent in all work activities. They also act as liaison between regulatory agencies and member companies and participate on various committees to provide input to Government agencies with respect to legislative and or regulatory changes which may impact our member companies.
The Federal Government agencies that administer the majority of health and safety legislation that pertains to the longshore industry are Human Resources Development Canada - Labour Programs and Transport Canada - Marine Safety. Workers' compensation for employees injured on the job is administered through the Workers' Compensation Board of British Columbia.
BCMEA Health and Safety department staff are available to assist with any issues related to health and safety on the waterfront.
