Location
The Vancouver Island Despatch Centre is located on the East Coast of Vancouver Island, at 9680 Chemainus Highway, one block west of the Chemainus waterfront.
Staff
The staff consists of two full-time ILWU elected Despatchers and two relief officers, who receive and process orders from member companies and despatch the required personnel.
Work Information
Work Forecasts are provided twice weekly.
Labour Orders
Employers place orders, for labour requirements, by telephone, prior to established order/cancellation times. Despatch slips are prepared manually for all orders and are then faxed to the companies. This procedure is repeated for each shift.
Despatch of Labour
Vancouver Island is comprised of three areas: Victoria (including Cowichan Bay), Chemainus (including Crofton, Harmac, and Nanaimo), and Port Alberni. To fulfill the manning requirements of Vancouver Island there is an interchange of employees from these areas.
Employees obtain their orders by telephone. All qualified union employees are despatched prior to casuals. Work is assigned on a low hours basis. Gangs and employees with the lowest hours are despatched first.
