Location
The New Westminster/Surrey Despatch Centre is located at 11828 Tannery Road, in the city of Surrey, on the east bank of the Fraser River just south of the Patullo Bridge.
Despatch Staff
The staff includes two Despatchers who receive and process orders for the New Westminster/Surrey area, including docks along the Fraser River and the Westshore/Delta Port sites (Roberts Bank).
Work Information
Work forecasts are provided to inform employees of work opportunities, gang orders and work information through an interactive voice response system. This system allows employees to determine the potential work available for each shift, the forecasted work opportunity and their approximate position in the sequence of despatch.
Labour Orders
Employers place orders for labour requirements, by telephone and fax, prior to established order/cancellation times. Despatch slips are prepared manually for all orders.
Despatch of Labour
The majority of employees obtain work through the physical despatch and, therefore, must make themselves available at the Despatch Centre prior to the designated despatch time. Each employee is assigned a metal plate that contains appropriate information including skills for which they are qualified. Employees are despatched from among those physically present at the Despatch Centre. Work is assigned on a rotational basis to those qualified employees who make themselves available.
